Stunt Racer HJ //

I started to work on this game around the end of August as part of House Race Jam #1. I have gone with a stunt racer where players collect coins and rings as time ticks down. It took about two week to create the game, with the challenges centering around programming the game assets (Car movement and physics, coin collecting, scoring, timer, etc.), and building the level using Unity 3D Probuilder, a method I used during my time at Full Sail University
The game jam insists the game should be a racing-like model similar to any racing game anyone has played. However, I decided to go with the point-collecting route as I had time to prototype and collect the level. One of the challenges I had was making sure not only the coins were collected and destroyed upon collision, but the arches as well. Since it was the first time I ever made a vehicle based game, I searched online for videos on how to collect coins with said vehicle and followed step by step on how to make the coins work. After making sure the script for the coins worked, I followed it up with the arches and soon made a scoring system with coins worth 1 point each and arches worth either 5 or 10 points.
The biggest challenge was of course the car itself. I used a free model from a Unity Store and found another video on how to program the car to respond, including collision detection, acceleration, braking, and turning. It was a new experience for me and things were rough from the start. One of the major issues I had was the game physics, trying to figure out the proper math to not only keep the car stable, but also make sure the car moves fast, stops in place, and turns on request. I also thought ahead of time about the possibility of the car flipping on its roof and searching for another video on resetting the vehicle. By far making sure the physics and the respawning took some time to figure out as it would sometimes phase the car through the level or easily toss the car around the level.
With the level center around my bedroom, I knew I had to make ramps, but the speed of the car wouldn't be able to get to the top which may frustrate players. I opted to put in a boost that would help shoot the car up on ramps and get closer to the tallest drawer. The only setback I have and still trying to figure out is how the car would literally launch itself off the ramp and overshoot the ground, getting it stuck behind the drawer or bed. However, it did make the game feel more arcade like than it needed to be
Overall, it was a great experience to create a game from scratch and something new and different on my own. There were a couple of things I could improve on, the speed of the car, physics, and audio, but it's something I am proud of to this date.
